The main objective of a fuel card is to enable trucking fleets greater control over their spending while giving the drivers flexibility on the road. A fleet card can be used for  variety of business related expenses but the scope of this article will focus strictly on the fuel, as it is one of the largest expenses. A fleet card unlike a credit card can only be used at designated locations for specific transportation related charges.

Fleet card allow preset spending limits, web interface management, fraud controls and variety of security measures. When choosing a fleet card for a small business it is important to make sure that that the locations you fill up at the most often will accept the fleet card. Generally fuel cards allow trucking companies to pay cash price at the pump, the cash price is a 6 cents/gallon discount from the credit card price at Pilot & Flying J truck stops – but it can vary.

Electronic Funds Source LLC (EFS) over variety of financial tools to transportation industry, including ubiquitous T-Checks. EFS is a new entity combining T-Chek Systems & TCH, the fleet card product offered by EFS. TCH or T-Card® Fuel cards are for over-the-road or local drivers with over 10,000 locations providing fuel & maintenance. EFS requires an initial setup fee of $50, with a monthly minimum of $50 if the service charges don’t exceed $50 combined. It may a bit harder to obtain credit from EFS as their require more financial documentation that their competitors. Fleets that have the option to pre-fund their accounts.


Over the Road

WEX cars are accepted at 90% of fuel locations in the US. Their over-the-road fuel card is known as FleetOne® and can be used at close to 7,000 trucks with no transaction fees. WEX does charge a monthly fee per card. Variety of discount programs are available that integrate with FleetOne® cards, for their local cards cost plus $0.11 or better. When it comes to getting credit, smaller fleets should have no trouble getting $10,000 or less with good credit history.

Discount Programs:

There are many companies that offer fuel rebates when using a fuel card. Besides paying the cash price better discounts can be negotiated from variety of vendors. Generally speaking discount programs with exclusive fuel stops can offer lower prices. Pilot Flying J, Petro,  Love’s, T/A & independent truck stops offer exclusive discounts to fleets but may require a minimum number of trucks to qualify.

    So EFS cards charges u monthly for using their cards?? Even if u don’t use it they charge u for services/no services?!? Did I read that right?!?

      That is correct. We are being charged nearly $100 a month in order to have this card, but are in search of a new one.

    I been using Comdata as a owner operator for years ,I don’t know how much they were charging my company but my discount was ranging 30-90 cents a gallon at the major fuel places like Quick Fuel,TA,Flying J etc but they just got switched to EFS card and I only have like 15 cents discount which means I’m loosing over $200 a month very disappointed
